The check engine light on the instrument panel of all cars sold in the United States since the mid-1980s is connected to a diagnostic computer that monitors the engine and other systems,SuperOBD SKP-900 especially emissions control. If one of the diagnostic sensor readings is outside a specified range, the computer turns on the check engine light. The computer also captures a code identifying the bad reading.

History

Computer monitoring using on-board diagnostic (OBD) processors began in the 1980s. The Clean Air Act of 1990 mandates that all vehicles sold in the U.S. after 1995 be equipped with an OBD system using a standard set of codes.Launch X431 The system is called OBD-II (on-board diagnostic, generation 2) in the industry. The codes captured by an OBD-II computer can be read with a code scanner.

Malfunction Indicator

The diagnostic system, whether OBD-II compliant or using the older, non-standardized,XPROG V5.70 OBD-I protocol, continually monitors an array of sensors. When a sensor reading is found to be "bad," the OBD computer illuminates the "Check Engine" light and stores a five-character code in memory. For a post-1995 Toyota Corolla, the OBD-II code can be read with a scanner. Pre-1996 Corollas require that a mechanic read a "blink code" to determine which sensor triggered the light.

Meaning

A lit Check Engine light is a general warning that your Corolla should be serviced as soon as possible.MB SD compact C4 Consult the owner's manual for specific instructions. Without a scanner or a blink code reading, it is impossible to determine the problem or its severity.

The fact that your 1994 Honda Accord won't go into gear is not necessarily all bad news. Not being able to put the car into gear may not be due to a faulty transmission.Launch EasyDiag Plus 2.0 It may be due to hydraulic or electrical problems rather than the gears themselves. Rebuilding or replacing the entire transmission in your vehicle is a time consuming and costly procedure. Perform these simple checks before taking your Accord to a mechanic for what could be a costly repair.

Run the vehicle to operating temperature. Turn off the car and prop open the hood when the engine is hot to get an accurate reading of the transmission fluid level in the engine. The transmission will not operate properly without the correct amount of fluid because it uses it for hydraulic power and lubrication.
Launch X431 EasyDiag Plus 2.0 XTOOL HD900 OBDSTAR X300M Launch X431 EasyDiag Plus 2.0 XTOOL HD900 OBDSTAR X300M Launch X431 EasyDiag Plus 2.0 XTOOL HD900 OBDSTAR X300M Launch X431 EasyDiag Plus 2.0 XTOOL HD900 OBDSTAR X300M
Check the transmission fluid level using the red handled dipstick in the engine compartment. Pull the dipstick out, wipe the fluid off the stick with a shop rag, reinsert the stick, pull it out again and read where the fluid ends on the scored markings. Fill the transmission with Honda-approved automatic transmission fluid if it reads low.

Peel back the carpet on the passenger side floor where the carpet meets the front of the vehicle. Locate the vehicle's electronic control unit, or ECU, behind the carpet. It is a black rectangular box with a wiring harness leading from it.

Undo the clip on the wiring harness and unseat the ECU from its bracket with your hands. The ECU is a computer that controls the operation of the engine and can be faulty. XTOOL HD900 It may be stuck in "Fail-Safe" mode which would not allow the vehicle to shift gears. Take the ECU to a professional to run a diagnostic.

Use a flathead screwdriver to unfasten the two circular clamps on the air intake arm. Remove the brackets and the air intake arm from the engine compartment. Look straight down where the intake arm was to locate the speed sensor on the back of the transaxle housing.

Use a 10-mm socket to remove the speed sensor and unfasten the wiring harness on the sensor with your fingers. The speed sensor is a small electronic plug with three wires coming from it. Install a new speed sensor by clipping the wiring harness into place and using a 10-mm socket to screw the sensor into its splined hole.

Install the air intake arm back into place and use a flathead screwdriver to secure the two air intake arm brackets. OBDSTAR X300M The speed sensor sends electronic information to the ECU so the transmission may operate. If no information is sent, then the transmission will fail to operate.

Tow the vehicle to a mechanic. If the steps above do not fix the problem then the gears inside the transmission are compromised and must be rebuilt or replaced by a professional.

Oxygen sensors have been installed into the exhaust systems of vehicles for quite a few years. Depending on the year of your Ford Explorer, you may very well have multiple oxygen sensors. The easy part is telling if one is bad; the hard part is telling which one is bad.VOLVO VIDA DICE These sensors monitor the amount of oxygen to the ratio of fuel burned through the exhaust system,l and if they detect a variation above or below a certain range, the sensor sends out a signal to the computer of the Explorer, which then triggers the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) to be illuminated on the dashboard while the vehicle is operating.

Locate the DLC (diagnostic link connector) under the driver's-side dashboard. It will have a trapezoidal shape and resemble the outlet of the code reader plug. Plug the hand-held portable code reader into the DLC once you've located it.

Turn the ignition key two clicks to the "key-on/engine-off" position. This will apply power to the code reader and allow all of the power options of the Explorer to perform without the vehicle actually running.

Locate the buttons and options on the code reader. Many hand-held code readers will have two or three buttons. One will be an "Enter" button and the other one or two will be scroll buttons that will manipulate the cursor to the onscreen menu of the code reader.Vagcom 16.8 Use the scroll button to move up or down to the "Codes detected" or "Read codes" option on the onscreen menu of the code reader. Press the "Enter" button.

Write down the number and the brief description the code reader dictates on the onscreen menu. An example may be "System Lean; Bank One Sensor Two." This would indicate the the mix of oxygen and fuel is too lean and the sensor in the first bank and farthest from the engine has triggered the MIL light to report the problem to you. While this is merely one example of many different DTCs (diagnostic trouble codes) that could trigger an MIL light to illuminate, it does indicate a problem with the oxygen sensor and which one has the problem.

Locate the bad oxygen sensor by referring to the manual to learn where the first cylinder or "Cylinder One" is located on the motor. Different-sized motors in the Explorers offer a variety of options. The position of the first cylinder dictates which bank the oxygen sensors run and scan.GM Tech 2 It may be the right side or it may be the left side. Some Explorers may have up to four oxygen sensors, and determining the bank is crucial to locate and condemn the problem sensor. The lower the number in the bank position (for example, bank one) the closer to the motor the sensor would be. The higher the number in the bank position (bank two), the farther down the exhaust system and away from the motor it will be.

Sensor Problems

The Chevrolet Impala security system relies on a sensor that detects the rotation of the lock cylinder, which can be performed successfully only by the proper key.VOLVO VIDA DICE The sensor can wear out over time and fail to submit a stable signal based on cylinder rotation, resulting in the inability to start the Impala. Replacing the sensor typically resolves the starting issue.

Lock Cylinder Problems

The lock cylinder in the Chevrolet Impala security system contains a key reader designed to detect the microchip encoded in the key. A worn or defective lock cylinder may fail to read the chip properly and signal the ECU that a non-encoded key has been used. The ECU then disables the engine to prevent theft.Renault CAN Clip Replace the lock cylinder to restore proper security system function.
